Nearly 300 general practitioners across New South Wales have completed state-endorsed training to assess and diagnose ADHD and begin prescribing medication, NSW Health reported on October 21.

The department says more than 1,675 GPs had already trained to continue ADHD medication for existing patients, and more than 25,000 people had accessed medication through that part of the program. It says the first group of new endorsed prescribers was prioritized for rural and regional locations.

NSW Health says those patients filled more than 130,000 prescriptions. These are government-reported service figures, not an independent evaluation; specialist referrals and support from psychiatrists and paediatricians remain part of the system.

Another 300 GPs were expected to begin the new training the following month, so that part of the expansion was still ahead.
