On October 20, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced seven awards through a new program for sickle-cell care. The awards establish regional coordinating hubs and expand the federal network from five regions to seven.

Each hub is expected to work with at least three clinical-community partnerships. Each partnership will include a clinical center and at least one community-based organization, connecting specialty expertise with local services.

The awards set up a network intended to make care and support easier to reach. The announcement does not yet report whether patient access or health outcomes have improved.
