Six weeks after a major storm damaged homes in Wyandotte County, Gilbert Kirk was still waiting to return to his house, which had lost its roof and living-room walls.

On Friday, volunteer Steve Vega and his crew brought plywood and plastic to cover the home and help block out the elements. Vega said the crew hoped to help Kirk get back to some normality.

The materials were one step, not a full repair. Kirk was still waiting for power to return, and other neighbors, including Sheila Gutto, were still seeking help with storm damage.

The local recovery effort continues, with the Unified Government offering a storm-assistance helpline for residents who need cleanup support.
