Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have developed a theoretical method for carrying out certain quantum operations much faster.

Earlier approaches to building these protected quantum states guided the system through thousands of repeated cycles. The Chalmers method uses quantum lattice gates and can complete a wide range of operations in a single driving cycle.

The researchers say that makes some operations more than a thousand times faster. Shortening the process could also reduce the time that electrical noise, heat, or other disturbances have to introduce errors.

The work is designed for superconducting quantum circuits, so it could be tested on existing hardware. The study by researchers from Chalmers and Tianjin University was published in Physical Review Letters.
