Several rare animals in China are slowly returning to places where they once lived. The Hainan gibbon, for example, was reduced to fewer than 10 individuals and now has 42 living in family groups.
The crested ibis came close to disappearing too. In 1981, only seven wild birds were found in China. Today, the global population has passed 12,000, with stable groups established across 15 Chinese provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities.
Przewalski’s horses, once extinct in the wild in China, have also been reintroduced. Their population there now numbers more than 900.
The work combines protected areas, habitat restoration, national parks, wildlife monitoring, and reintroduction. China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration says more than 200 rare and endangered wild animal species have entered a period of population recovery.
