Sri Lanka has launched the first project in a programme designed to add 300 megawatts of solar power to the national electricity grid.
The 3-megawatt ground-mounted plant in Veyangoda was inaugurated on September 13 by Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka.
The project is expected to generate about 6.35 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by roughly 4,340 tonnes annually, according to government estimates reported by Newswire.
The wider programme is part of Sri Lanka's plan to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels and meet 70 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030.
