India's Press Information Bureau reported that two male Great Indian Bustards were released into the wild on October 4 at Sam in Desert National Park, near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
The release is part of the Great Indian Bustard Recovery Programme, which brings together the environment ministry, Rajasthan's Forest Department and the Wildlife Institute of India.
The ministry said the effort has involved nearly a decade of work in conservation breeding, habitat management, threat reduction, habitat restoration and community engagement.
The bustard remains critically endangered, and the agencies' wider recovery work continues. The release is one step in that effort, not a sign that the species is out of danger.
