A UN press release for the 2026 SDGs report is a reminder that some of the world's biggest improvements happen quietly, in pipes, power lines, and policy.
The update says nearly one billion people have gained access to safely managed drinking water since 2015, and 1.2 billion people have gained access to safely managed sanitation. It also notes electricity now reaches 92% of the world's population.
Connectivity has expanded too: the UN says internet access rose from 40% of the global population in 2015 to 74% today. And it reports child labour fell by more than 20 million children between 2020 and 2024.
None of this cancels the gaps that remain, or the urgency of the next five years. But it is real proof that coordinated global targets can translate into day-to-day improvements for huge numbers of people.
