When Brigitte Tisenchek began volunteering at the Broome County Humane Society through Binghamton University's LEAD program, she started with the everyday work that keeps a shelter running.
Since then, she has become a volunteer lead. She helps walk dogs, supports vaccine and pet food pantry clinics, trains new volunteers, and speaks with pre-health students about her experience.
She also took an injured cat into her home and cared for it through recovery. Her service was recognized with Binghamton University's Al Vos Excellence in Community Engagement Student Award.
The university says Brigitte's work has made a difference both for animals waiting for homes and for the people learning how to care for them.
