The World Health Organization and its partners launched a global roadmap on October 8 to address hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia.
WHO estimates these conditions complicate 10 to 15 percent of pregnancies worldwide and account for around 16 percent of maternal deaths. They are also associated with more than 500,000 stillbirths and newborn deaths.
The roadmap calls for coordinated work on research, clinical guidance, access to medicines and diagnostics, implementation, advocacy and accountability.
More than 140 partners met in May and identified 20 priority research questions to guide future investment. WHO describes the roadmap as a plan for 2026 through 2035 and beyond, not as a report of improvements already achieved.
