Victoria has opened Australia’s first offshore wind auction, inviting companies to bid to build an initial two gigawatts of offshore wind power.
The Victorian government says that amount of electricity could power about 1.5 million homes each year. The projects are intended to add renewable energy as the state’s older coal-fired generators retire.
Bids will be judged on value for money, whether projects can be delivered, and the benefits they bring to local workers, businesses, and communities. Successful projects would move on to investment, construction, and operation.
The auction is expected to close in August 2027, with contracts awarded in 2028. It gives Gippsland another role in Victoria’s changing energy system and a chance to build new regional jobs.
