Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research says the area under deforestation alerts in the Amazon fell to its lowest level in the historical series for the year from August 2025 through July 2026.
The Deter monitoring system recorded 2,874.38 square kilometers under alert in the Amazon. That was 36 percent lower than in the previous period and 55.6 percent below the average of the previous ten years.
The Cerrado also recorded progress. Its 5,119.46 square kilometers under alert was 7.8 percent lower than the previous period and the lowest figure of the past five years.
These are alert figures used to guide inspections, not the final annual deforestation totals. INPE says the data will continue to support Brazil’s efforts to protect its forests and other biomes.
