When a fire broke out in a neighbor's flat at Block 979B Buangkok Crescent, 18-year-old Institute of Technical Education student Zhou Yiheng heard glass breaking and cries for help.
He grabbed a fire extinguisher, covered his nose and mouth with a wet towel, and opened the door. Inside, he found an older man and an eight-year-old boy, then helped get them out of the smoke.
The extinguisher could not overpower the flames, but Zhou stayed focused on getting his neighbors to safety. The family later stayed at his home for a while because their families had known each other for nearly 20 years.
Singapore's Civil Defence Force said the fire involved the contents of a bedroom and that one person was taken to hospital. The family thanked Zhou and the other neighbors who answered their call for help.
