The Phoenix Species Project has launched with a $200 million commitment to help recover 100 species listed as Critically Endangered or Extinct in the Wild.
The project is led by Re:wild and the Bezos Earth Fund, with the IUCN Species Survival Commission serving as a scientific knowledge partner. The species span mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, and plants.
The work will take place across 30 countries and will be shaped with Indigenous Peoples, local communities, scientists, conservationists, and governments.
Plans may include habitat restoration, conservation breeding, moving animals to safer places, disease management, and controlling non-native species. The funding is designed to last for multiple years, giving recovery efforts time to work.
