The Ohio State University has launched an undergraduate major called ASL: Applied Communications and Community Studies, giving students a new way to pursue a degree focused on American Sign Language.
The program combines language learning with intercultural competence, Deaf cultures and Deaf histories. Deaf and hearing instructors helped shape the coursework.
At the time of the university's October 14 report, three students were officially enrolled, and more were planning to join. Ohio State's existing ASL Studies minor had 150 students.
Students may also take part in service-learning with Deaf communities beyond campus, connecting their studies with local organizations and community life.
