The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has launched four pilot programs focused on preventing chronic disease in children.
The two-year, $32 million effort will work in Lake County, Indiana; the Sandusky and Toledo metro areas in Ohio; Brownsville, Texas; and Petersburg, Virginia.
Each community will work with residents, schools, local health leaders, and community organizations to decide which approaches fit its own needs. Public Health Service officers will join those local partnerships.
Better nutrition is one early focus. The program will also use neighborhood-level information to see which ideas are helping, so communities can learn and adjust as the work continues.
