Researchers at the National University of Singapore built a forearm sleeve with a flexible display woven from electronic fibres. The prototype can show images and video, respond to finger presses, and connect wirelessly to other devices, the university reported.
Fifty-four display fibres form a 96-by-54-pixel screen measuring about 16.8 by 10.5 centimetres. The sleeve also combines the display with fibres for a speaker, microphone, movement sensors, and temperature readings.
Researchers reported that light output and touch response were nearly unchanged after 50 detergent washes and 1,000 bends. The team said the textile remained breathable, similar to cotton, polyester, and denim.
The research was published in Nature on Oct. 21. The university describes the sleeve as a research prototype, and the university describes health-monitoring uses as a possibility for future development.
