The U.S. National Science Foundation is investing more than $290 million in eight research institutes devoted to quantum science and technology.
Three of the institutes are new, while five are receiving renewed support. Each will receive roughly $28 million to $37 million over five years for work on quantum computers, sensors, materials, and ways to correct errors.
The institutes bring together researchers in 19 states and 36 higher-education institutions, along with federal laboratories and more than 30 companies.
The program also includes internships, summer schools, teacher programs, mentorships, and partnerships with community colleges and high schools. Hundreds of students and early-career researchers are expected to receive training.
