Microsoft has opened applications for a new Community-First Grants program offering a total of $1 million to nonprofits in King County, Washington.

The first round is expected to support 25 organizations with grants of $20,000 each. Eligible charities can propose projects in areas including civic life, education and workforce development, housing and basic needs, or sustainability and transportation.

Examples include updating a community space for young people or older residents and expanding transitional housing for families. The program is aimed at projects that might otherwise be delayed or difficult to complete.

Applications are open through October 23, with grantees expected to be selected in November. This is a new funding opportunity; the first recipients have not yet been announced.
