Young lake sturgeon were released into Ohio’s Cuyahoga River on September 19 as part of a project to bring back a native fish that was once common there.
The National Park Service says the river is now welcoming sturgeon again because old dams have been removed and water quality has improved. The release is part of a multi-year effort led by park, wildlife, and conservation partners.
Families and visitors were invited to learn about the river’s recovery and take part in releasing the fish. The event also included experts from the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Ohio wildlife agencies.
Each small fish began a journey that could eventually help rebuild a healthy population in the river.
