A review published in Nature Ecology & Evolution brings together more than 70 studies of environmental and sustainability efforts that did better than expected under local constraints.

The authors call these cases bright spots. Their framework groups the conditions behind them into three broad areas: specific practices and processes, social capacities, and local context.

The review also compares six approaches researchers have used to identify bright spots, giving studies from different fields a shared structure for discussion.

The authors say clearer comparisons can help explain where unexpected success happens, why it happens, and how others might learn from it. They do not present one plan as a solution for every ecosystem.
