The China Zorrilla has entered commercial service between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Colonia, Uruguay. Its first commercial crossing marked the start of regular service on the River Plate route.
Built in Tasmania by Incat, the 130-metre catamaran runs entirely on batteries. Shippax reports that it can carry up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles.
The ferry operates without onboard diesel exhaust during a crossing. The service is a notable step for electric passenger shipping, although the report does not provide a lifecycle emissions comparison or details on the electricity used to charge the vessel.
