Canada announced $34.2 million for 141 climate resilience projects in 128 communities on August 12. The funding comes through the Green Municipal Fund's Local Leadership for Climate Adaptation Initiative.
The projects will help communities plan for climate risks and protect the places people depend on. The work includes cooling measures in parks, flood-resilient infrastructure, and ways to make homes safer during extreme heat.
Halifax Regional Municipality will receive $785,380 for cooling measures in parks. Port Coquitlam will use $789,600 to advance flood-resilient infrastructure, while Kanesatake Lands will receive $1 million for flood-reduction solutions.
The Canadian Climate Institute estimates that each dollar spent on climate resilience can save up to $15 over the long term. Preparing early can make future heat and flooding less disruptive for families and businesses.
