Canada, Alberta, and Enhance Energy have begun construction on the Origins Carbon Capture and Storage Hub near Clive, Alberta.
When operations are expected to start in January 2027, the hub is planned to permanently store up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. Natural Resources Canada says that amount is comparable to the yearly emissions of more than 500,000 cars.
The project will connect with Alberta’s existing carbon dioxide transportation network and initially serve industrial facilities in the province. Its designers say the system can expand over time.
The work builds on an existing Clive storage project that the Canadian government says has permanently stored more than 9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide since 2020.
