The National Science Foundation has awarded Worcester Polytechnic Institute $2 million for scholarships and mentoring designed to help students with financial need stay in science and technology studies.
The program will support 70 high-performing undergraduate and graduate students, including transfer students from nearby community colleges and the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez.
Students can study robotics, mechanical and materials engineering, civil and environmental engineering, or interactive media and game development. The grant will also support project-based classes, summer learning, and internships.
WPI says the program is meant to ease the financial pressure that can make it harder for talented students to finish their degrees. Faculty will study which kinds of support help more students graduate and share what they learn.
