A pair of endangered piping plovers nested this summer on Wisconsin Point in Superior, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced. It is the first documented nesting in the St. Louis River estuary since 1977.
The birds chose a stretch of sand and cobblestone beach that was created as part of a habitat restoration project for the shorebird.
Local, tribal, state and federal partners helped restore the site, including the creation of 14 acres of new habitat along a sand spit within the Wisconsin Point Bird Sanctuary.
The pair eventually left the site and was later spotted on Long Island. Conservation teams hope the birds will return, as piping plovers often come back to places where they have nested before.
