A second phase of the Nyamongo water-source project in Tarime District has been completed, and officials expect it to extend access to clean and safe water for 125,566 residents in 10 villages.
Barrick North Mara Mine funded the phase through its community program. It added 5.5 kilometres of main transmission pipeline and 8.6 kilometres of local distribution network, The Citizen reported.
The expansion adds six villages to a system first designed for four. A manager at the district's rural water agency told the newspaper that the water had been tested and confirmed safe for people to drink.
Residents said easier access would save time they had spent finding water. The figure of 125,566 is the project's planned coverage, and the report did not say how many people were already receiving water when it was published.
