A baby Sumatran orangutan has been born at the Jantho Orangutan Reintroduction Center in Aceh Besar, Indonesia. The Forestry Ministry said monitoring teams spotted the infant with its mother, Wenda, on July 29.
Wenda was rescued in 2009 when she was about a year old. After rehabilitation, she moved to the Jantho center in 2013 and was released into the forest in 2014.
The birth is a sign that a rehabilitated orangutan can return to the forest and raise a young one there. It also shows why the work continues after release, with teams tracking animals and protecting the reserve around them.
Officials say the reserve still needs careful monitoring, help from conservation partners, and strong local support to prevent forest destruction and wildlife trafficking. For orangutans, protecting the forest is the heart of protecting the species.
