Google Quantum AI reported on October 15 that its researchers had demonstrated a technique called magic state cultivation on the company’s Willow processor. The work was published in the journal Science.
The method checks quantum states for errors and discards attempts that do not pass those checks. In the reported experiment, it reduced errors by a factor of 40 and produced a state with 99.99 percent logical fidelity.
The result is a research milestone, not a demonstration of a useful, general-purpose quantum computer. The team said it still needs to show the technique working at a larger scale.
