Canada’s environment ministry announced support on October 13 for a conservation project covering more than 81,400 hectares of taiga forest and peatlands south of Kapuskasing, Ontario.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada is leading the project. Its total investment is $64 million, including more than $13 million from the federal government, with Ontario, businesses, foundations and private donors also contributing.
The federal release says the landscape stores more than 30 million tonnes of carbon and provides habitat for species at risk, including the red-headed woodpecker and bobolink. The announcement did not include detailed parcel boundaries or a timetable for completing protections.
