New Zealand’s Department of Conservation will receive a four-year, $9.7 million boost to protect national parks and native ecosystems from wild goats and deer.
The funding will support targeted management in important conservation areas, reducing the pressure that browsing animals place on native vegetation and giving ecosystems more room to recover.
The work will take place in landscapes including Whanganui, Kahurangi, Nelson Lakes, Westland Tai Poutini, and Fiordland national parks, as well as Waitōtara Conservation Area.
The programme will also strengthen monitoring and surveillance. That can help protect earlier conservation gains, reduce the risk of animals returning, and build long-term knowledge and partnerships.
