India's team at the 2026 International Linguistics Olympiad in Romania won one gold medal, three bronze medals, and an honourable mention, according to a statement from IIIT Hyderabad reported by The Indian Express.
Shrilakshmi Venkatraman won gold. Aarav Anil Rao, Nishanth Shankar Lakshmanan, and Advay Misra each won bronze, while Soham Amit Pednekar received an honourable mention.
The competition brings together secondary-school students from more than 40 countries. The problems use unfamiliar languages and ask contestants to find patterns in grammar, sounds, or sentence structure.
Students are not expected to arrive with a background in linguistics. The contest rewards careful observation, logical reasoning, and the patience to work out how a language is built.
