When Tracy Bernard Smith saw smoke coming from a nearby house in Lauderhill, Florida, he walked over to see whether someone needed help.
Rose Nelson, 95, was inside. A lightning strike had started a fire in an air-conditioning unit, and smoke was filling the home.
Smith lifted a window and helped Nelson out, then carried her away from the flames. Fire crews took her to hospital care, where her family said she was recovering from smoke inhalation and burns to her throat and tongue.
The house was badly damaged, but Nelson was alive because a neighbor noticed the smoke and stopped to help. Her family is now working toward a safe place for her to return to.
