The Environment Agency said on October 13 that it had completed a flood defence upgrade at Keyhaven Harbour in Hampshire.
The agency replaced the Avon Water Outfall, a structure that forms a barrier between the Solent and Avon Water. The old outfall had corroded, and the replacement uses materials designed for the coastal setting.
The upgrade is intended to help stop high tides from backing water up the River Avon and flooding areas upstream. The agency says the work better protects around 40 properties.
The new structure is expected to last longer and need less maintenance. It is one part of the local flood defence network, and officials caution that no system can prevent all flooding.
