The Houston Zoo has welcomed several new reptiles, including star tortoises, five eyelash pit vipers, Hosmer's spiny-tailed skinks and Henkel's leaf-tailed geckos.

The births of the skinks were a first for the zoo. Some of the geckos arrived through pairings recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan.

The zoo says those carefully managed pairings help maintain healthy populations of animals in human care.

Visitors can see the new arrivals in a special habitat at the zoo's Reptile and Amphibian House.
