Brad Held, Jason Burlingame, and Brendan Robinson of Grove City, Ohio, decided to run one mile every hour for 24 hours to mark the 25th anniversary of September 11.
What began as a workout idea became a fundraiser for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which helps injured veterans, first responders, and families of fallen first responders. The runners also wanted to give their children a way to learn about why the day matters.
The group first hoped to raise about $1,500. That goal was reached almost immediately, so they raised it to $3,000. By Thursday, 10TV reported that donations had passed $3,500.
The runners planned to finish with their children, families, neighbors, and an escort from the Jackson Township Fire Department.
