A restoration partnership is growing bull and giant kelp in Clayoquot Sound, within the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation.
Redd Fish Restoration Society and West Coast Kelp are raising young kelp on submerged lines before transplanting some to restoration sites. First Nation knowledge-holders helped identify where the work should take place.
Mongabay reported on October 6 that more than 4,200 square metres of kelp habitat had been planted since the project began in early 2026, an area about three and a half Olympic-size swimming pools.
The team is continuing to monitor the nursery and plans to transplant some mature kelp around the Sound. The longer-term recovery of underwater forests will take time to assess.
