Affordable housing is often discussed like an abstract market problem. But for families, newcomers, and seniors, it shows up as something simple: whether there is a stable home close to school, work, and community.
In a news release dated July 25 in Vancouver, the Government of Canada said Build Canada Homes and the Ismaili Council for Canada signed a memorandum of understanding to work together on housing initiatives that help build more homes Canadians can afford.
The federal announcement says the partnership is aimed at delivering over 1,250 rental homes, including affordable rental units, with projects expected in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec.
The plan is expected to use a community-based approach called the Generations model, which the release describes as multi-generational rental housing paired with services and amenities that support residents at different stages of life.
