Researchers at UC Santa Cruz contributed to a regional report for California’s Fifth Climate Assessment, working with Indigenous tribes, local communities and nonprofit groups.
The researchers also led development of CoSMoS Adapts, which provides coastal communities with block-by-block visualizations of future flooding and erosion risks.
The report describes adaptation work already under way in the region, including marsh restoration at Elkhorn Slough, coastal-dune restoration and oyster reef building.
The tool is a planning aid, not a guarantee against flooding. Its local-scale maps give communities more information to weigh as they consider how to prepare.
