Construction began in British Columbia on the North Coast Transmission Line, a major project that will expand access to clean electricity in the province's north. The line will connect growing communities and industrial hubs between Prince George and Terrace.
The project is being built in phases. The first phase is expected to be complete by the middle of 2030, with the second phase planned to reach completion in winter 2032. Together, the phases will more than double transmission capacity along the route.
The provincial government expects the project to support about 9,700 direct full-time jobs when finished, with as many as 1,400 workers employed during peak construction. It also says the line will help electrify industry, reduce emissions, and support more reliable power for communities.
First Nations are key partners, and the province says it is working to finalize co-ownership agreements. Those agreements are intended to provide economic returns, jobs, and long-term participation in the project's success.
