Angola's polio vaccination teams have reached more than nine million children under five through two national campaigns and two campaigns carried out with Namibia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in border areas.
The Ministry of Health, Angola's National Immunization Program, the World Health Organization and other partners then spent three days reviewing what worked and where the campaigns could improve.
The review looked at everything from vaccine distribution and cold storage to community outreach and disease surveillance. The goal is to find children who have not yet received a dose and make future campaigns stronger, especially in hard-to-reach places.
Polio is still a public-health threat in some parts of the world. Angola's careful follow-up shows that a successful campaign is not only about the doses delivered, but also about learning how to protect more children next time.
