Residents heard animals in distress at 'Namgis Dock in Alert Bay, British Columbia, on July 28. Three sea otter pups were tangled in a fishing net hanging over the water.
Two of the pups were breathing and swam back to their mother as soon as they were freed. The third was not moving, so resident Gordon Mellish cut it out of the net and began CPR.
The pup started breathing again. Police and wildlife volunteers then worked with the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society to get it to a rehabilitation facility, where it made a full recovery after several days.
The young otter was later released back into the wild at an Alert Bay beach. Mellish was there to open the cage, and the pup walked to the water, turned back once, and then swam away.
