Global life expectancy reached 73.3 years in 2023, close to the 73.4 years recorded in 2019, according to new estimates released by the World Health Organization on October 2.
Healthy life expectancy, which estimates the years people live in good health, reached 62.8 years in 2023. That remained 0.4 years below its 2019 level.
The WHO estimates cover health trends across countries and regions from 2000 to 2023. The organization also reported that noncommunicable diseases made up a larger share of deaths in 2023 than in 2000.
The figures show a near recovery in lifespan after the pandemic disruption, while making clear that years lived in good health have not fully caught up.
