Six orangutans were rescued from community plantations in West Kalimantan after forest fires cut off their routes to the remaining forest. The animals included two mothers with their young and two juveniles.
The rescue operations took place on September 4 and September 8 in Pemangkat Village. Patrols by West Kalimantan’s conservation agency and the Indonesian Orangutan Rehabilitation Foundation helped locate the animals.
Local residents, plantation owners, the Palung Foundation, and a village forest group also supported the effort. Medical teams gave fluids, oxygen, cooling treatment, and careful examinations to the animals that showed signs of heat stress.
The orangutans are now being monitored at a rescue and rehabilitation center. The team will assess their health before considering a return to the wild.
