Five rescued Sumatran orangutans are now being cared for at the Open Orangutan Sanctuary in Danau Alo, in Indonesia's Jambi province.
Four arrived from a rehabilitation quarantine centre in North Sumatra after being rescued in Langkat and Padang Lawas. The fifth was rescued in Dumai, in Riau province.
The orangutans will spend several months in a forest school, where they can rebuild the skills they need to live independently. Their progress will be watched closely, and each animal will move at its own pace.
Once their wild behaviour has returned, the Jambi Natural Resources Conservation Center plans to release them near Bukit Tigapuluh National Park. In the forest, orangutans help new trees grow by spreading seeds as they travel.
