Sokoto State has started its 2026 tree-planting campaign, with a goal of distributing 500,000 seedlings across all 23 local government areas, Tribune Online reported on September 4.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu launched the campaign at Gidan Man Ada Housing Estate and asked residents to help tackle desertification, deforestation and climate change.
The state Ministry of Environment has procured economic and environmental seedlings for local councils to collect and plant. Officials said this year’s effort will reach households, schools, religious centres and farm plots, not only public spaces.
The campaign is the state’s fourth annual planting effort since 2023. Officials also urged residents to care for the trees as they grow and to replace trees that must be cut down.
