RMIT University researchers say they have developed a water-treatment material that rapidly removes microplastics and nanoplastics, along with some PFAS, the industrial chemicals often nicknamed ‘forever chemicals.’

In its announcement, RMIT framed the work as a step toward practical water treatment, targeting pollutants that are difficult to see and hard to fully remove once they enter waterways.

The university said the new material is meant to bring the approach closer to real-world use, where speed and ease of separation matter.

The team’s broader goal is to turn a lab material into something that can be used in treatment settings where the smallest plastic fragments can slip through conventional filters.
