Suzanne Fisher has volunteered with the American Red Cross for more than three years and has deployed nearly 10 times to help people recover after disasters.
After Super Typhoon Bavi struck Guam and nearby islands in July, Fisher joined the response. Families were working to restore their homes and routines while preparing for a new school year.
One woman Fisher met had been experiencing homelessness before the typhoon. Fisher sat with her, completed an intake assessment, and listened carefully so the Red Cross could connect her with useful resources.
The woman told Fisher she wished Fisher were her mother. The exchange reminded Fisher that recovery is not only about supplies and paperwork. It is also about treating people with dignity when life feels unsettled.
