A Penn State-led research team developed a pilot rapid test that combines two kinds of antibody information used in standard syphilis diagnosis.
The design uses particles with a layer of silver between two gold coatings to make a test line easier to see. In tests with 36 clinical specimens, the line was 19% to 46% more intense than with conventional gold particles, with the largest gains at low antibody levels, the team reported.
The results come from laboratory and specimen testing, not routine clinical use. Larger validation studies and more prototype development are still needed, and the device is not approved for use in clinics.
The researchers say a future version could help bring more of the diagnostic process into one visit, but that benefit has not yet been demonstrated in patient care.
