On October 8, UMass Memorial Medical Center held its third annual Dahlia Day, bringing 1,000 flowers to patients at its Memorial, University, and North Pavilion campuses.

Nurse practitioner Sarah Skinner helped start the tradition. Hospital staff, family members, and community groups grew the dahlias, and nurses delivered them to patients on each floor.

Skinner told Boston.com that patients appreciated the flowers and that the gesture could brighten a difficult day. The report describes emotional support, not a medical effect.
